Day of Deprecations

April 6th, 2008

In place of today’s expected plugin update, Day 7 of the 14 Days of Plugins will feature the update of four existing plugins in the form of deprecations. These four plugins were originally conceived of to fill missing or incorrect behavior in the WordPress core. Since their release (and for most, as a direct result of their release), WordPress has been updated to include the behavior provided by the plugins. Thus, these plugins are no longer necessary.

Never Moderate Admin or Post Author

This plugin prevented comments made by the site admin, the post’s author, or optionally, any registered user above a specified user level, from being being moderated or marked as spam, regardless of the apparent spamminess of the comment.

When I released the plugin, I also simultaneously made a bug report and patch for the WP core, which was quickly accepted and applied.

Reported as a bug in trac ticket #1262.
Fixed in WordPress in changeset #2556.

(Updated plugin #7)

No Duplicate Comments

This plugin prevented visitors from leaving duplicate comments/pingbacks/trackbacks to a post.

When I released the plugin, I also simultaneously made a bug report and patch for the WP core, which was quickly accepted and applied.

Reported as a bug in trac ticket #1265.
Fixed in WordPress in changeset #2561.

(Updated plugin #8)

Notification Disabler

This plugin disabled notification emails about new and/or moderated comments, pingbacks, and/or trackbacks en masse or on an individual author basis.

When I released the plugin, I also simultaneously made a bug report and patch for the WP core, where it met with little discussion and was summarily closed as a “won’t fix”. Six months later, Matt posted a bug report on the same issue and a fix was proposed and committed.

Originally reported as a bug in trac ticket #1263.
Later reported as a bug in trac ticket #1670.
Fixed in WordPress in changeset #3031.

(Updated plugin #9)

Sync Draft Slug and Title

This plugin keep the post slug in sync with any changes to the post title while a post was still a draft.

When I released the plugin, I also simultaneously made a bug report and patch for the WP core. After a couple weeks of discussion and a few suggested approaches, a patch was ultimately accepted and applied.

Reported as a bug in trac ticket #.
Fixed in WordPress in changeset #2496.

(Updated plugin #10)
